Ligacupen ble startet for ε utnytte det faktum at alle de nye flomlysanleggene ga nye kampdager pε ψyriket. Samtidig var det meningen ε gi flere meningsfylte kamper til lag som ikke deltok i de nye internasjonale turneringene (europacupene).
